This was one of the harder pages to do because unlike most bands from the 60's, Johnny Green and his henchmen are still playing performances-up to 50 weeks a year ! I would like to take the opportunity now to send out a huge Bat Thanks to Mark Starks for providing all the material on Johnny and the Greenmen and going out of his way to answer all my questions.
Now for a bit of Greenmen Trivia -After their appearance on the series, Johnny has kept in touch with Charles B. FitzSimons ("Charlie") and spoke to him on the phone recently. FitzSimons booked Johnny Green and the Greenmen on Batman after Johnny performed a fire-eating act in his office.FitzSimons was struck by the Greenmen's bright green hair as he greeted them in the waiting room."This is what I'm looking for -ZANY THINGS - come on in!", he said.
The Green hair color gave the wardrobe department a fit because Caesar Romero's Joker wig always had problems turning up green on camera, they spent a ton of money trying to correct that but The Greenmen's hair with their Rit Dye color came out perfect !
A little more about the Greenmen-
Johnny has played in more than one hundred countries, performed for the President and the First Lady of the United States, King Constantine of Greece, the Shah of Iran, toured with the Rolling Stones and the Beatles and been featured in concert with Bob Hope.
He
is perhaps best known, however, for his appearance on BATMAN.
Batfans received a special treat when Adam West and Johnny Green reunited to open a Detroit Vipers Hockey game in January of 1997.
Besides being friends of Chad and Jeremy and Paul Revere and the Raiders, Johnny Green and the Greenmen
were
contracted to AVI Records -Liberace's label - in the 70's. Johnny
also dated Leslie Gore, all connecting the musicians on BATMAN in
more ways than one!
The Greenmen are going stong as ever still touring and still performing for their audiences ! If you are a fan of Johnny and the Greenmen, you might give Mark a email here- mark-one@webtv.net. He has more info than I could put on probably ten pages about this fine group.
